An Entry way Koi Pond

This 10′ x 15′ koi pond in North Hampton, New Hampshire was designed to create a natural-looking ecosystem pond while maximizing the available depth and space for the homeowner’s fish. The finished pond reaches a deepest point of approximately 30 inches, providing an important area for koi to overwinter in our New England climate when paired with appropriate winter equipment such as an aerator and deicer.

Maximizing depth was an important consideration during construction. Rather than using excessive layers of rock that would consume valuable water volume, we carefully selected large, stable boulders capable of retaining the pond shelves while minimizing how far the rock extended into the pond. This allowed us to maintain the natural, multi-level appearance of an ecosystem pond while preserving as much depth as possible for the koi.

The pond is complemented by an approximately 8-foot stream with two distinct drops leading into the main pond. At the end of the stream, a larger waterfall serves as the primary focal point, framed by large boulders that give the feature a natural sense of scale and permanence. Carefully placed smaller rockwork helps transition between the larger stones and soften the edges of the waterfall.

Several hardy aquatic and marginal plants were incorporated throughout the pond and stream. Plants are an important part of the ecosystem pond philosophy, adding color and seasonal interest while helping integrate the pond into the surrounding landscape. As they mature, they will further soften the stonework and give the pond an increasingly established, natural appearance.

We also incorporated several features designed to make the pond easier to maintain and more enjoyable throughout the year.

An automatic dosing system regularly introduces beneficial bacteria into the pond, supporting the biological processes that help maintain healthy water. Automating the dosing takes one more routine maintenance task off the homeowner’s list.

An automatic fill valve helps maintain the pond’s water level as evaporation occurs. Rather than requiring the homeowner to regularly monitor and manually add water, the system automatically replenishes the pond as needed.

A built-in fish cave provides the koi with a protected area where they can retreat and feel secure. It also adds another interesting element to the pond’s underwater environment.

Finally, a pond lighting package extends the enjoyment of the feature into the evening. Carefully positioned lighting highlights the waterfalls, rockwork, plants, and pond itself, allowing the homeowners to continue enjoying the feature after sunset.

The finished pond brings together natural stone, moving water, plants, fish habitat, and practical automation within a relatively compact 10′ x 15′ footprint. By carefully protecting the deepest portion of the pond and selecting appropriately sized boulders for the shelves, we were able to create a natural-looking feature without sacrificing valuable water volume.

With the koi, plants, waterfalls, and surrounding landscape all working together, this pond will continue to mature and develop character as the landscape grows.
