The Design
making the most of a space
Merrimac, MA Ecosystem Pond, Patio & Pergola
For this Merrimac, MA backyard renovation, our clients wanted to create a space that would bring more life and character to their property while providing several ways to enjoy the outdoors. Their vision included a pond large enough to support koi and goldfish, the relaxing sound of a babbling brook-style waterfall, and multiple seating areas centered around a new paver patio and pergola.
The property presented some unique design challenges because of wetlands bordering the backyard. The pond and surrounding landscape had to be carefully designed around the wetland area, with the project requiring approval and inspection by the local regulatory commission. This made thoughtful planning especially important from the beginning of the project.
Designing the Backyard Around the Pond
We worked closely with the homeowners to design the pond and patio so the water feature could be enjoyed from several areas of the property. The finished ecosystem pond is visible from the existing deck, the new patio, and inside the home, allowing the sound and movement of the waterfall to become part of the backyard and house throughout the seasons.
The layout also created dedicated spaces for entertaining and relaxing. A new pergola provides an outdoor dining area adjacent to the patio, while additional open space was intentionally preserved for a hot tub that the homeowners may add in the future.
One of the goals for the pond was to create the feeling of a longer stream without requiring a large amount of additional yard space. We accomplished this by incorporating a winding stream with several natural-looking twists and turns into a relatively compact footprint. This gives the water more movement and creates a longer visual experience as the stream travels toward the pond.

Aquascape Ecosystem Pond
The pond was built as an Aquascape ecosystem pond designed to provide a healthy environment for koi and goldfish while keeping the water feature natural in appearance. The system includes an Aquascape 2500 BioFalls filter and 1000 Skimmer, along with an integrated lighting package to allow the pond and waterfall to be enjoyed after dark.
A fish cave was also incorporated into the pond, providing the koi and goldfish with a place to shelter and adding another functional element to the pond’s design.
The rockwork and elevations were carefully planned to make the pond and stream feel like they belonged naturally within the landscape. Rather than simply creating a pond and placing a patio next to it, we designed the elevations of the entire backyard together so that the pond, stream, patio, pergola, and surrounding landscape would work as one cohesive space.

Paver Patio & Outdoor Living Area
The new paver patio provides a substantial area for outdoor dining and entertaining while creating a comfortable transition between the house, existing deck, and pond. Balancing the patio elevations with the natural contours needed for the pond and waterfall required careful planning during construction.
The result is a backyard that combines a custom water feature with functional outdoor living space. The pond provides the sights and sounds of moving water, while the patio and pergola create areas where the homeowners can spend time with family and friends.

Ongoing Pond Maintenance
We continue to service this Merrimac, MA ecosystem pond with seasonal pond maintenance, including spring pond cleanings and fall shutdowns. One of the most rewarding parts of maintaining a project like this is seeing the landscape mature over time.
The homeowners are avid gardeners, and the surrounding plantings have continued to develop and fill in around the pond and patio. As the landscaping matures, the pond and waterfall increasingly feel like an established part of the backyard rather than a newly constructed feature.
This project is a great example of how a custom koi pond, natural-looking waterfall, paver patio, and pergola can be thoughtfully integrated into a backyard to create a space that is both beautiful and functional.
“This is my husband’s “happy place.” We spend every afternoon ( weather permitting) sitting and watching the fish; enjoying the sounds of the water; and counting frogs! It is very soothing. This year the plantings are filling in and maturing and it truly is becoming our favorite place. Mike, of NEPP, did a superb job. We can’t thank and praise him enough. I can’t overestimate the value of adding a backyard pond to your home. And I can’t overestimate the quality of work done by New England Ponds & Patios” – Karen D.
“Mike put our pond in several years ago, He is very meticulous, fitting each stone to perfection assuring water leakage is not evident. He has followed his work over the years and made sure his “baby” is still doing well. He also built a large very sturdy pergola for us and put several berms on the property for flower highlights. I’d rate him a 10 but that is too low. Maybe a 12. would be better” – Steve D.
